Walmart is set to introduce substantial improvements to its employee health benefits, effective in 2027. The company, a major employer in the United States, announced that its workforce of 1.6 million will see expanded coverage options.
Key among these enhancements is the provision of approximately 250 prescription drugs at no out-of-pocket cost. This includes essential medications like some insulins and inhalers. Furthermore, associates diagnosed with type 2 diabetes may benefit from GLP-1 medication coverage under specific conditions, mirroring recent adjustments seen in other large corporations.
Beyond prescription drugs, Walmart is broadening its coverage for rare diseases. Employees will receive no-cost access to specialists for evaluations and treatment reviews for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
In a significant move for new parents, Walmart will begin offering 12 weeks of paid leave next month for situations where a newborn requires admission to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This leave can be combined with the existing 16 weeks of paid maternity and parental leave available to frontline workers.
