VW Taps JSW Amid India Partnership Hunt
9 Sep
Summary
- Volkswagen inked a non-binding deal with Indian conglomerate JSW.
- This move follows previous failed tie-ups with Tata and Mahindra.
- JSW gains access to European ICE technology, diversifying from Chinese partners.
Volkswagen Group has entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with JSW Group, signalling a renewed effort to establish a strategic partnership in India. This collaboration aims to cover manufacturing, sales, and technology, addressing Volkswagen's long-standing search for a local ally. The German automaker's global restructuring includes significant cost reductions and a push for improved operating margins by 2030.
This latest pursuit comes after Volkswagen's previous attempts to partner with Tata Motors in 2017 and Mahindra & Mahindra in 2024, both of which did not materialize. The potential joint venture with JSW could allow Volkswagen to leverage JSW's domestic capabilities and navigate a pending $1.4 billion tax liability dispute with Indian customs authorities. JSW, meanwhile, seeks to gain access to Volkswagen's established internal combustion engine technology, diversifying its automotive supply chain which currently relies heavily on Chinese manufacturers for electric and hybrid platforms.
While both parties have signed only a non-binding MoU, with formal negotiations expected by the end of the year, customers are unlikely to see immediate changes. The success of this alliance remains to be seen, especially given the complexity of the deal and the ongoing tax issue. Volkswagen's performance in India has been modest, though recent successes like the Škoda compact SUV have shown growth.
