Summary
- Vodafone Idea seeks to quash DoT's $1.3B AGR demand
- Argues demand inconsistent with earlier court guidelines
- Appoints new CFO as previous one concludes tenure

As of October 7th, 2025, the telecom giant Vodafone Idea is embroiled in a legal battle with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) over a $1.3 billion AGR demand. The company has approached the Supreme Court, seeking to quash the DoT's additional claim, which it argues is inconsistent with the court's earlier rulings on AGR liabilities.
Of the total $1.3 billion dues, $400 million pertains to the post-merger Vodafone Idea entity, while the remaining $900 million relates to liabilities of the pre-merger Vodafone Group. Vodafone Idea has also filed a separate plea, seeking a comprehensive reassessment and reconciliation of all AGR dues up to the 2016-17 fiscal year, in accordance with the Deduction Verification Guidelines issued in 2020.
Amid this legal battle, Vodafone Idea has announced the conclusion of Murthy GVAS's tenure as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) of the company, effective October 5th, 2025. The Board of Directors has now approved the appointment of Tejas Mehta as the new CFO and KMP, effective October 6th, 2025.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Vodafone Idea's plea on October 6th, 2025, as the telecom operator seeks to resolve the long-standing AGR dispute with the government. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Vodafone Idea's future in the Indian telecom market.
