Vizhinjam International Seaport has commenced full-fledged Export-Import (EXIM) operations, a development set to enhance India's maritime trade efficiency. This strategic move aims to decrease dependence on foreign transshipment hubs and shorten transit times for goods.
The port is ideally located near major international shipping routes, boasting a natural draft capable of handling Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). This positions it as a crucial gateway for South India's businesses, including those in Keralam, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
A substantial Phase 2 expansion, slated for completion by December 2028, will increase the port's annual capacity to 5.7 million TEUs. This expansion will introduce additional container berths, enhance connectivity, and is projected to create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
This development signifies a major investment by the Adani Group, underscoring their commitment to Keralam's infrastructure-led growth. The port's operations are expected to improve India's overall maritime competitiveness by retaining more value from its trade.
