8 Sep
Summary
- Visa combines settlement data with onchain credit infrastructure.
- Over $694 billion in stablecoin loans since 2020 globally.
- Credit Coop uses smart contracts for financing with zero defaults.
Visa is innovating in digital finance by connecting its established payment systems with the burgeoning onchain lending market. This strategic move aims to transform the $694 billion global stablecoin-denominated loan market, which has operated 24/7 since 2020, by extending its reach beyond crypto circles into everyday business operations. By combining VisaNet settlement data with onchain credit infrastructure, lenders gain better insights into program performance, facilitating capital extension to businesses.
This initiative builds upon Visa's existing stablecoin strategy, including its Stablecoin Platform and numerous stablecoin-linked card programs that have seen significant growth. The company believes that blockchain-based lending, enhanced by reliable payment data, can address the working capital challenges faced by rapidly growing payment companies, which often struggle with traditional financing requirements. An early success of this model is Visa's collaboration with Credit Coop, which has facilitated over $2.5 billion in cumulative financed settlement volume since 2023 with no defaults.
Chris Walker, Founder and CEO of Credit Coop, highlights that this integration allows payment companies to leverage their settlement receivables as real-time collateral, enabling lenders to assess live performance and enforce repayment. Visa views onchain credit as a natural evolution, merging traditional financial infrastructure with digital asset technologies to support new forms of lending and treasury management. As digital payment ecosystems evolve, Visa is committed to applying its principles of security and reliability to the next generation of financial services.
