Industrialist Vijaypat Singhania, a prominent figure in India's corporate landscape, passed away on Saturday at the age of 87. He led the Raymond Group as chairman and managing director from 1980, steering the company through significant economic changes and transforming it into a diversified industrial conglomerate. His leadership saw Raymond expand into sectors such as synthetic fabrics, denim, steel, and cement.
Beyond his business acumen, Singhania was renowned for his passion for adventure and aviation. He was a record-setting pilot, achieving an altitude record in a hot air balloon in November 2005 and setting an endurance record for a solo flight from London to New Delhi in 1988. His contributions were recognized with India's third-highest civilian honor, the Padma Bhushan, and the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award.
Singhania handed over the leadership of the Raymond Group to his son Gautam Singhania in 2000 but remained active in public life. He also served as Chairman of the Governing Council of IIM Ahmedabad from 2007 to 2012 and was appointed Sheriff of Mumbai in 2006. His passing marks the end of an era for a leader celebrated for his dual achievements in business and extreme adventure.
