Vietnam Starts Chip Plant Construction
16 Jan
Summary
- Vietnam begins building its first semiconductor plant.
- The facility aims for trial production by late 2027.
- Vietnam seeks to dominate chip research, design, and manufacturing.
Construction has begun on Vietnam's first semiconductor fabrication plant, a significant step toward building a domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. Viettel, the military-run telecom company, initiated the project, which is expected to commence trial production by late 2027.
This new facility, located in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park near Hanoi, will enable Vietnam to participate in all six stages of the semiconductor value chain, including the complex wafer fabrication process. Viettel plans to fine-tune operations and upgrade equipment through to 2030.
The plant will focus on chip research, design, manufacturing, and testing for critical sectors like aerospace and automotive. This initiative aligns with Vietnam's broader strategy to train tens of thousands of chip design engineers and significantly grow its semiconductor workforce.
