Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced an ambitious expansion of its 5G services, targeting 90 additional cities by May 2026. This significant rollout will extend Vi's 5G coverage to a total of 133 cities across India, aiming to bolster its presence in major data markets.
The company's strategic plan includes coverage in 15 key circles, such as Mumbai, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, with a focus on industrial corridors and urban clusters with high data usage. Specific northern cities like Karnal and Ludhiana, eastern cities including Kolkata, and western areas like Mumbai and Gujarat will see enhanced 5G availability.
In the southern region, states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala will receive expanded 5G footprints, alongside areas in Madhya Pradesh. Vi will utilize AI-powered Self-Optimising Networks for this deployment and has established partnerships with global technology vendors, including Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung.
According to Vi's Chief Technology Officer, Jagbir Singh, this expansion aligns with the strategy to prioritize 5G rollouts in markets with a high penetration of 5G devices. The move aims to augment Vi's 5G network in prime cities and deepen its presence in Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations.
