VCs Pivot: AI's Data Center Surge Trumps Climate Tech
27 May
Summary
- VC firm Transition raised $150 million for AI, power, and critical materials.
- AI's demand on data centers is driving investment shifts.
- Climate tech investment is still significant but now supports AI infrastructure.

Transition Ventures, a London-based venture capital firm, has successfully raised a new $150 million fund. Initially founded five years ago with a focus on climate startups, the firm is now prioritizing investments in power, artificial intelligence, robotics, and critical materials.
This strategic shift highlights a significant investor reorientation towards the burgeoning AI sector. The explosive growth of AI has dramatically increased the demand for data center capacity, creating unprecedented energy needs. "Data centers were already a big thing and now, with AI, it's exploding," noted Transition partner David Helgason.
While climate tech investment is projected to reach $89 billion by 2026, a substantial part of this capital is now channeled into supporting the AI infrastructure boom. This includes companies providing clean energy for data centers and those developing solutions for the bottlenecks in the data center buildout, such as startups creating faster AI chips and advanced semiconductor metrology.
However, climate-focused startups without a clear AI thesis have faced challenges, as exemplified by the closure of Running Tide, an ocean-based carbon removal startup. Helgason expressed difficulties in marketing such solutions to the voluntary carbon market.
