The Railway Board has given its approval for the construction of a new, advanced maintenance depot specifically designed for Vande Bharat train coaches. This significant facility will be established at Tatanagar railway station in Jamshedpur, with an estimated project cost of Rs 383.78 crore. The decision was communicated through a formal notice from the Railway Board.
The new depot will be situated in the Loco Colony area, expanding the existing coaching depot at Tatanagar. This expansion is anticipated to substantially increase maintenance capabilities, thereby facilitating the future operation of more high-speed trains. The project received clearance following a thorough review of the technical proposal submitted by the Chakradharpur railway division.
This facility will be equipped with all necessary infrastructure for comprehensive servicing, including technical inspections, routine maintenance, and rapid washing systems for both Vande Bharat Chair Car and Sleeper rakes. Beyond its operational benefits, the project is expected to generate employment for local youth and provide a considerable boost to the area's economic development.
In a related development, Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato has also proposed the construction of four additional platforms and a loop line at Tatanagar station, under the PM Gati Shakti scheme. This proposal, aimed at addressing increasing traffic pressure, is valued at Rs 482 crore and is currently under consideration by the Railway Board.
