Uzbekistan Eyes Indian Steel to Cut Costs
18 Aug
Summary
- Uzbekistan seeks to import steel from India to reduce costs.
- Current logistics for steel from China cost up to USD 100 per tonne.
- Uzbekistan and Indian steel associations signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

Uzbekistan is actively seeking to import steel from India, a move driven by the landlocked nation's objective to substantially reduce logistics expenses. Currently, Uzbekistan imports approximately 1 million tonnes of steel, including TMT bars, primarily from China. The shipping costs from China can amount to as much as USD 100 per tonne, in addition to the steel's purchase price.
To circumvent these high costs, Uzbekistan is exploring a more efficient route through India. The Uzbekistan Metallurgy Association has formalized this interest by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Steel Association (ISA). This collaboration is set to focus on manufacturing, technology, environmental sustainability, and logistics, fostering mutual understanding and growth within both nations' steel sectors.
This initiative aligns with India's broader goal of increasing steel exports by encouraging domestic players to explore new international markets. As the world's second-largest steel producer, India exported 9.1 million tonnes in 2025-26, with key destinations including the EU, Vietnam, and the UAE. The ISA, representing major Indian steel producers, plays a crucial role in advocating for such export-boosting strategies.
