Vietnam Surges as Top US Tech Supplier
28 May
Summary
- Consumer tech imports from China have fallen significantly since 2022.
- Vietnam now supplies nearly a quarter of US consumer tech imports.
- Tariff payments by importers jumped over fivefold in 2025.

US electronics manufacturing has seen a significant pivot away from China due to President Trump's tariffs. Consumer Technology Association (CTA) data reveals that consumer technology imports from China dropped from 54% in 2022 to just 22% last year. Vietnam has now become a primary supplier, providing nearly a quarter of these imports, with a further decrease to 12% from China in early 2026.
The shift dramatically impacted product categories like laptops and gaming consoles, with Vietnam becoming the dominant source for many. These changes occurred as the US imposed tariffs on various Asian markets, though key products like laptops and smartphones were initially exempted. However, gaming consoles faced significant tariff hikes, contributing to a more than fivefold increase in total tariff payments by importers in 2025, reaching $23.5 billion.
Following a Supreme Court ruling in February 2026 that invalidated many tariffs, the trade landscape changed again with a new global tariff imposed. The CTA expressed concerns about potential future tariffs on foreign-made chips, warning of economic harm and increased consumer prices. Industry leaders are increasingly focusing on navigating tariff complexities rather than product innovation.
