AI Fuels Record Power Demand Surge
7 Jul
Summary
- US power consumption reached a record high for the second consecutive year.
- AI data centers and electrification are major drivers of increasing demand.
- Commercial sector electricity demand is projected to surpass residential use in 2026.

U.S. power consumption is set for continued growth in 2026 and 2027, following a record high in 2025. This upward trend is significantly driven by the expanding requirements of artificial intelligence data centers and the ongoing electrification of homes and businesses.
For the first time on record, electricity demand growth is anticipated to be led by the commercial sector, surpassing residential demand in 2026. The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts power demand to rise from 4,195 billion kWh in 2025 to 4,269 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,399 billion kWh in 2027.
Concurrently, the energy generation mix is shifting. The share of coal-fired power is projected to decrease from 17% in 2025 to 15% in 2026 and 2027. Renewable energy's contribution will increase from approximately 24% in 2025 to 27% by 2027, while natural gas and nuclear power will maintain their shares.
