US Trade Talks Postponed Amid Tariff Turmoil
22 Feb
Summary
- US-India trade deal talks rescheduled due to recent developments.
- US Supreme Court ruled Trump's tariffs illegal, exceeding authority.
- New US tariffs proposed after court ruling impacting India.

India and the United States have mutually agreed to postpone the chief negotiators' meeting initially scheduled for Washington starting February 23, 2026. The revised timeline aims to allow both sides to assess recent developments and their implications on the interim trade pact.
The postponement is significant, occurring shortly after the US Supreme Court declared President Trump's broad import tariffs illegal. The court ruled that the President had overstepped his authority by imposing these levies under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977.
Following this judicial decision, President Trump announced on February 21, 2026, an increase in tariffs to 15 percent, up from the previously announced 10 percent, effective February 24, 2026. This move has implications for India, which had previously seen tariffs of 50 percent, later reduced to 25 percent, with a framework to lower them to 18 percent. The new proposed levy would add to existing import duties.
