Norwegian energy group Equinor has confirmed it is adhering to a stop work order issued by the U.S. Department of the Interior concerning its Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project. This suspension stems from national security concerns, impacting a crucial renewable energy initiative.

The project, situated off the New York coast, possessed an 810-megawatt capacity, capable of energizing 500,000 homes. By September 30, 2025, over 60% of its development was reportedly finished. Equinor noted that the halt jeopardizes ongoing activities and could significantly affect the project's future.

This marks the second work stoppage for Empire Wind 1. Previously, in July, Equinor incurred a $763 million impairment charge related to both Empire Wind 1 and the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The project's gross book value was approximately $3.1 billion as of September 30, 2025.
