US Customs Nears Tariff Refund System Launch
1 Apr
Summary
- Customs agency developing a system for $166 billion in illegal tariff refunds.
- New refund system completion estimated between 60% and 85%.
- Up to 45 days processing time for refund applications expected.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is making strides in establishing a streamlined process for refunding an estimated $166 billion in tariffs. These collections were declared illegal by the Supreme Court. The agency reported that the development of a new portal for claims, review, processing, and refunds is currently between 60% and 85% complete.
The CBP filing indicates that the new system will accept claims in phases, prioritizing entries finalized within the last 80 days or those under review. This initiative follows the Supreme Court's decision last month to strike down broad global tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
While the Supreme Court did not specify refund procedures, leaving that to the Court of International Trade, CBP has proposed its new process. This system aims to allow importers to apply for refunds without needing to file individual lawsuits, a process that could otherwise be costly for smaller businesses. The agency previously suggested a 45-day goal for processing these applications, a deadline that ends in late April.
