Credit Scores Stable, But Pressure Mounts
25 Aug
Summary
- Average FICO score remains unchanged at 714.
- Housing and vehicle payments have risen faster than inflation.
- Gen Z and Millennials show largest credit score gains pre-pandemic.

Americans have largely maintained their credit scores, with the average FICO score holding steady at 714 as of August 2026. Beneath this stability, however, affordability pressures are intensifying. Housing and vehicle payments have escalated more rapidly than overall inflation, straining consumer budgets.
Younger demographics, specifically Gen Z and Millennials, have demonstrated the most substantial credit score increases since before the pandemic. Gen Z added 17 points to their average score, while Millennials gained 10 points, reflecting improved credit habits among younger consumers.
Despite these credit score gains, both Gen Z and Millennials report that high housing costs are a significant barrier to managing other expenses. This challenge persists even as a majority of these age groups receive ongoing financial support, the impact of which on payment behavior remains under observation.
