US Buyers Drive Global Yacht Sales Surge
27 Oct
Summary
- Americans now represent 40% of all global yacht sales.
- US buyers are the majority in the market for yachts over 250 feet.
- Demand from Europe and the Middle East has slowed significantly.
The American wealth machine is increasingly fueling the global yacht industry, with U.S. buyers now comprising about 40% of all international sales. This trend is even more pronounced at the high end, where Americans constitute the majority of purchasers for yachts exceeding 250 feet in length.
Industry executives note a significant slowdown in demand from traditional markets in Europe and the Middle East. This has made American buyers indispensable for continued growth in the luxury yacht sector. Despite a general market slowdown since the post-COVID peak of 2022-2023, the demand for newly built or impeccably maintained large yachts, particularly those over 200 feet, remains robust.
Deliveries for new mega-yachts ordered today are currently projected for 2031 or later, as top shipyards are operating at full capacity. This scarcity, coupled with strong demand, allows almost-new mega-yachts to command substantial premiums. The yacht charter business also experiences a surge in interest from younger Americans, many of whom made their fortunes in the tech industry, often using charters as an entry point before considering a purchase.
