UPS Capped Severance Offers Amidst Workforce Dispute
6 Apr
Summary
- UPS agreed to cap severance offers for 7,500 drivers.
- Early retirement packages will be offered at $150,000.
- The company plans to cut up to 30,000 jobs this year.

United Parcel Service has finalized an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, capping severance offers for 7,500 drivers. This resolution addresses a dispute concerning the company's workforce reduction plans. The agreement stipulates that eligible drivers will receive an early retirement package valued at $150,000.
The union had contested UPS's "Driver Choice Program," asserting it was implemented without proper negotiation and in violation of the 2023 labor contract. This program, according to the union, allows UPS to enter individual agreements with drivers, bypassing collective bargaining.
These developments occur as UPS disclosed intentions in January to reduce its workforce by up to 30,000 positions and cease operations at 24 facilities throughout the current year. The strategic shift aims to reduce reliance on lower-profit deliveries for its primary client, Amazon.com.
