9 Oct
Summary
- Women are trained and certified as banking correspondents.
- BC Sakhis receive initial financial support and transaction commissions.
- The program facilitated over 39,000 crore in financial transactions in FY 2025-26.

The Uttar Pradesh government's BC Sakhi initiative aims to extend banking services to remote villages. Launched in May 2020, the program designates one Banking Correspondent Sakhi per Gram Panchayat. These women, often members of Self-Help Groups, undergo rigorous training and certification from the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance.
Selected women are equipped with digital banking tools to offer essential financial services directly to rural residents. This model significantly reduces the need for individuals to travel to distant bank branches. The initiative has seen substantial growth, with nearly 40,000 BC Sakhis operating across over 58,000 Gram Panchayats.
During the 2025-26 financial year, these BC Sakhis facilitated transactions exceeding 39,000 crore. They are provided with initial financial assistance for six months and earn commissions on facilitated transactions. The program's success underscores its dual objective of enhancing rural banking access and generating income for women in Uttar Pradesh.
