UP Bans 'Puja Ghee': Edible Fat Lookalike Poses Risk
11 Oct
Summary
- Uttar Pradesh banned 'puja ghee' products resembling edible ghee.
- Products used inedible fats and posed risks if mistakenly consumed.
- Strict warnings and black cross marks mandated on non-edible products.
The Uttar Pradesh government has enacted a ban on products marketed as 'puja ghee', citing concerns over their resemblance to edible ghee. These items, often made with inedible fats and substances like paraffin or mineral oil, were found to pose a risk to consumers if accidentally ingested due to similar packaging and appearance.
In an order issued on Saturday, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) directed all food licence holders in Uttar Pradesh to cease the manufacture and sale of these 'puja ghee' products. The regulator highlighted that some manufacturers were using premises also handling edible oils, increasing the risk of contamination and mislabeling.
To prevent consumer confusion, manufacturers are now required to display prominent warnings, including a black cross mark and the text 'Not for Human Consumption' in both Hindi and English, on non-edible worship products. Furthermore, companies are prohibited from using the same brand name for both edible ghee and inedible worship items. Strict enforcement measures are in place, with the potential seizure of violating stocks and suspension of licenses for non-compliant establishments.
