United Spirits Challenges Maharashtra Rum Prohibition
11 Aug
Summary
- United Spirits challenges rum ban in Maharashtra for alleged misbranding.
- Company argues prohibition order lacked due legal process.
- Dispute highlights ongoing regulatory scrutiny on India's alcohol sector.

United Spirits, the India unit of global spirits major Diageo, has legally challenged a government prohibition on its McDowell's No. 1 Celebration Matured XXX Rum in Maharashtra. The company contends that the food safety officer who issued the stop-sale order was not legally empowered and bypassed due process by relying solely on a food analyst's report.
The ban's timing has also been questioned, as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) initiated consultations on flavour labelling rules shortly after the prohibition was imposed. United Spirits asserts that continuing the ban while these labelling issues are under consideration is premature and commercially detrimental.
This dispute arises amid broader regulatory actions affecting India's approximately $40 billion alcoholic beverages industry. FSSAI has banned several brands due to alleged mislabelling and improper artificial flavour additions. The Bombay High Court heard the United Spirits challenge on August 11, 2026, seeking a response from the federal government by August 19, 2026.
