Retail Prices Hit 7-Month Low Amidst Soccer Discounts
28 Jul
Summary
- Annual shop price inflation in July fell to 0.9%, the lowest since December 2025.
- Food price inflation slowed to 2.2%, reaching its lowest point since February 2025.
- Supermarket discounts on alcohol and snacks influenced the price reduction.

In July, average prices at British retailers experienced their smallest annual rise, increasing by only 0.9%. This marks the lowest inflation rate since December 2025, down from 1.2% in June. The slowdown is largely a result of aggressive summer promotions by retailers, especially on food items like alcohol and snacks, coinciding with the men's soccer World Cup.
Food price inflation eased to 2.2%, its lowest point since February 2025. Similarly, non-food inflation decelerated to 0.2%. However, higher semi-conductor and manufacturing costs led to price increases for electrical goods, health, and beauty products. The British Retail Consortium's survey, conducted between July 1 and July 9, indicates a competitive retail environment aimed at curbing price hikes.
