UK Fuels Green Truck Push: £1 Billion Overhaul
25 Mar
Summary
- UK launches £1bn initiative to boost electric truck adoption by 2030.
- Companies can save up to £81,000 per heavy zero-emission truck.
- An additional £170mn is allocated for charging infrastructure installation.

The UK government has initiated a significant £1 billion program designed to encourage businesses to transition to electric trucks and vans, with the initiative running until 2030. This push is aimed at bolstering energy security, particularly amidst rising fuel prices.
Companies purchasing the heaviest zero-emission trucks could see savings of up to £81,000, representing 40% of the vehicle's cost. An existing grant offers up to £5,000 for electric van conversions, complemented by £170 million for charging infrastructure to reduce installation costs for businesses and public authorities.
This strategic investment aligns with the UK's net-zero 2050 commitment, targeting transport decarbonization. While sales of electric vans saw a 34% increase in early 2026, their market share lags behind government targets. The transition for heavy-duty vehicles has been slower, facing challenges related to charging infrastructure and cost.
Mike Hawes of the SMMT supported the measures but emphasized the need for complementary infrastructure, including grid connection prioritization and dedicated charging stations for commercial vehicles, to ensure the success of this electric transition.
