Fast Food Hygiene Ratings Cause Alarm
28 Feb
Summary
- Several UK fast food branches received zero hygiene ratings.
- Urgent improvements needed for some outlets to avoid closure.
- Inspections cover hygiene, cleanliness, and food safety management.

Numerous UK branches of popular fast food chains, including Subway, McDonald's, KFC, Greggs, Chicken Cottage, Papa John's, Dixy Chicken, and Perfect Fried Chicken, have received low hygiene ratings from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
Several outlets across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland were given zero or one-star ratings, indicating a critical need for improvement in food handling, safety, and facility cleanliness. Some branches of Subway in Hull, Middlesborough, and Derby, along with a McDonald's in Halifax and Papa John's in Acton, received zero ratings.
The FSA's inspections are unannounced and rate premises on a scale of zero to five. Scores of two or below are considered fails, with zero ratings demanding rapid improvement to avoid closure. If public health is at imminent risk, the worst-rated establishments can be shut down immediately.
