UK Banknotes Go Wild: Animals to Replace Royals!
11 Mar
Summary
- British wildlife will adorn upcoming Bank of England banknotes.
- Public consultation will determine which native animals are featured.
- New notes aim to enhance counterfeit resilience and celebrate nature.

The Bank of England is set to replace historical figures on its banknotes with images of British wildlife. This significant shift, which aims to enhance security against counterfeiting and celebrate the UK's natural environment, will involve public input. A panel of wildlife experts will curate a shortlist of native animals and birds, which the public will then vote on. This process is expected to take a few years before the new designs enter circulation. Nature emerged as the most popular theme in a public consultation, receiving 60% of votes. While the monarch will continue to be featured, the reverse sides of the notes will transition from historical personalities, a practice that began in the 1970s, to depictions of the UK's diverse fauna. This move may also help the Bank avoid past controversies regarding the underrepresentation of women and ethnic minorities on currency. The final design may also incorporate elements of nature such as plants and landscapes.
