UK Probes AI's Influence on Financial Advice
6 Jul
Summary
- UK official suggests regulating large language models for financial advice.
- A quarter of UK consumers trust AI tools for financial guidance.
- Firms' AI reliance on few tech providers poses system-wide risks.

A senior official from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK has proposed a review to determine if large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini should be regulated as general-purpose AI tools. This recommendation stems from their growing influence on consumer financial decisions. The review will consider adapting the regulatory perimeter within the next three to six months.
This initiative comes as global regulators grapple with the widespread impact of artificial intelligence. The FCA's analysis highlights that more than a quarter of UK consumers now trust AI tools for financial advice, despite a lack of awareness regarding the protections offered by regulated financial services. Ashley Alder, Chair of the FCA, emphasized the need to keep pace with the rapidly evolving environment.
Furthermore, the review warns of potential system-wide risks arising from the financial sector's increasing adoption of AI. A significant majority of financial firms globally are using AI, with many in advanced stages of implementation. A key concern is that firms' dependency on a limited number of technology providers could lead to correlated failures and common points of failure across the financial system.
