Summary
- UAE's energy sector has navigated regional crises through diversification.
- The UAE remains a reliable energy supplier to Europe and the world.
- AI demand presents a global challenge for energy planners, says official.
The UAE's energy sector has proven resilient amidst recent regional crises, thanks to a strategic decision to diversify its energy sources. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of Energy and Petroleum Affairs, highlighted this success, stating that the country's energy mix, which includes nuclear, renewables, and fossil fuels, along with ongoing development in hydrogen and other future fuels, has ensured uninterrupted services.
Speaking at ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, Al Olama confirmed that UAE oil exports continued throughout the crisis period. The nation is now integrating lessons learned into facility design and infrastructure capacity to further enhance its energy systems' robustness. Significant investments are being made in renewables, with plans to expand solar capacity to 20 gigawatts and beyond.
Al Olama also addressed the growing demand from AI data centers as a significant global challenge for energy planners. He noted the UAE is focusing on efficiency, citing AI's potential to reduce data center power consumption by up to 40%. The country is actively planning for expansion, cooling, and utilizing existing infrastructure to meet this vertical growth in energy needs.
The UAE aims to be a reliable energy partner, committed to its energy transition and working towards net zero by 2050. This aligns with the EU's climate neutrality goals, fostering a spirit of mutual learning and strategic partnerships in the global energy landscape.
