Travis Kalanick, the co-founder and former chief executive of Uber, has launched a new startup named Atoms. This venture, an expansion and rebranding of his previous company City Storage Systems, is dedicated to developing specialized industrial robotics. Atoms aims to automate key tasks within the mining, transport, and food industries. Kalanick is betting on the effectiveness of task-specific machines to significantly improve industrial productivity.
The startup is structured into three main divisions: Atoms Food, which will provide infrastructure for the food industry; Atoms Mining, focused on increasing productivity in mines; and Atoms Transport, described as a foundational platform for robots. This strategic focus on specialized automation comes as industries face increasing pressure to adopt new technologies for efficiency and profitability.
Kalanick expressed that "gainfully employed robots are the machines best suited for the job at hand." He views these specialized systems, powered by what he terms "physical artificial intelligence," as the future for automating real-world tasks. This move marks a return to his passion for building specialized computing systems after his departure from Uber in 2017.
