Tesla's AI Pivot: Musk Shifts Focus from Cars

Elon Musk is increasingly positioning Tesla as an artificial intelligence and robotics company, a significant departure from its automotive roots. Despite nearly half of the company's revenue coming from car sales, Musk's discourse has heavily shifted.

Analysis of seven years of Tesla's quarterly earnings calls shows Musk now dedicates approximately 50% of his speaking time to AI, robotaxis, and Full Self-Driving software. This focus has escalated dramatically from 2022 when these topics constituted only 15%-20% of his remarks.

Concurrently, discussions about robotics, particularly the Optimus humanoid robot unveiled in 2021, have surged. Musk spent less than 2% on Optimus in its debut year but now allocates at least 10% of his focus, reaching nearly a third on a Q3 2025 call.

This strategic emphasis on future technologies comes as Tesla's traditional automotive business faces slower growth. Consequently, Musk now spends less than a third of his time discussing cars and manufacturing on earnings calls.

Other Tesla executives, like CFO Vaibhav Taneja and VP of Engineering Lars Moravy, are also shifting their attention toward AI and robotics but at a slower pace than Musk. Their discussions still heavily feature the automotive business, reflecting the ongoing importance of car sales and manufacturing, which have seen increased competition.

These executives echo Musk's optimism about the future, framing Tesla's advancements as bold bets for achieving abundance, even as the company navigates challenges in its core automotive sector.
