American-Made Paradox: Tesla Tops List as EV Market Shrinks
23 Jun
Summary
- Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y secured the top two spots on Cars.com's American-Made Index.
- New EV sales dropped 27% year over year in Q1 2026.
- The expiration of the federal EV tax credit is a primary reason for declining demand.

For the second consecutive year, Tesla vehicles have topped Cars.com's American-Made Index. The Tesla Model 3 secured the No. 1 spot, with the Model Y following closely at No. 2. This marks a significant achievement for the EV manufacturer, even as the broader US electric vehicle market faces considerable challenges.
New electric vehicle sales plummeted by 27% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. This decline, with EVs constituting only 5.8% of all new-vehicle sales, is largely attributed to the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit at the end of the third quarter of 2025. Consequently, demand has sagged, prompting many automakers to scale back production significantly.
