Tesla's Q3: Cash Surprise, Profit Squeeze
22 Oct
Summary
- Tesla generated $1.53 billion free cash flow in Q3 2026, defying cash burn predictions.
- Operating income fell 56% year-over-year, squeezing margins to 2.6%.
- Full-year capex guidance reduced, with heavier spending planned for 2027.

In a surprising turn of events, Tesla reported a positive free cash flow of $1.53 billion for the third quarter of 2026. This figure defied analysts' projections, which had anticipated a substantial cash burn of nearly $5 billion for the period ending October 21, 2026.
The positive cash flow was primarily driven by reduced capital expenditures, which amounted to $4.732 million, falling significantly below the expected $7.96 billion. Despite this, Tesla's operating income saw a sharp decline of 56% compared to the previous year, resulting in a squeezed operating margin of 2.6%.
Further adjustments were made to the company's financial outlook, with full-year capital expenditure guidance lowered to approximately $20 billion from over $25 billion. Management indicated that more significant spending is planned to commence in 2027, with potential substantial investments in 2028.
Tesla's cash reserves increased to $45.447 billion, providing a financial cushion. However, this buffer does not offset the declining core profitability, as revenue saw a slight decrease of 0.2% to $28.046 billion. The company's shares experienced volatility following the report.
