Elon Musk has officially confirmed that Tesla has halted production of its Model S and Model X electric vehicles, marking the end of an era for the company's foundational models. Custom orders for these vehicles are no longer being accepted, with Tesla's inventory currently holding approximately 600 units, primarily located in the United States. No new units remain available in Canada or Europe.
The Model S, first launched in June 2012, was Tesla's initial mass-market electric car and achieved significant success, becoming the top-selling electric vehicle globally in 2015 and 2016. The Model X followed in 2015, distinguished by its unique Falcon-wing doors. Together, these two models have recorded over 610,000 deliveries throughout their production runs.
This production cessation was foreshadowed during Tesla's Q4 2025 earnings call in January, where the company referred to it as an "honourable discharge." At that time, Musk had encouraged consumers to place orders while still possible. Reports indicate that the factory space previously dedicated to Model S and Model X production will be repurposed for the manufacturing of Tesla's Optimus robots. Tesla's website has since removed the configurators for both models, directing buyers to view only the pre-configured inventory vehicles, which include incentives like free Supercharging.
