Tesla Bets on AI, Robots Over EVs
24 Apr
Summary
- Tesla is tripling spending to over $25 billion for AI transformation.
- Global EV sales saw Tesla surpassed by BYD; deliveries shrank for two years.
- Robotaxi and humanoid robot ventures are years from commercial adoption.

Tesla Inc. is experiencing a significant shift, with investors prioritizing its artificial intelligence and robotics ambitions over its electric vehicle sales. The company plans to triple its annual spending to over $25 billion to accelerate its transition into a "physical AI company," including investments in a joint chipmaking factory with SpaceX.
Globally, Tesla's EV sales have declined, with BYD Co. surpassing it as the top seller. This downturn is attributed to increased competition, the end of US tax credits, and production disruptions from a Model Y redesign. Despite a recent 6% year-on-year sales increase in Q1 2026, it marked the second-worst quarter since 2022.
Musk's focus on a limited vehicle lineup, with prices generally higher than competitors, has contributed to market share loss. While a sub-$30,000 car is anticipated, Tesla's current "affordable" options start around $40,000. The company is developing a new, smaller SUV, but its existing models face challenges from newer designs.
Beyond EVs, Tesla's revenue from selling regulatory credits has decreased. Its energy storage business also saw a Q1 slowdown but is expected to grow overall this year.
Futuristic ventures like self-driving robotaxis and Optimus humanoid robots are still in early development. While Optimus production might begin in mid-2026, widespread use is projected further out. The robotaxi service, launched last year, operates with human supervision in some areas and plans expansion, though significant revenue is not expected until 2027.
Tesla's operations are increasingly intertwined with Musk's other companies. SpaceX is a partner in the Terafab chipmaking venture, and Musk's AI startup xAI has received significant investment and integrated its Grok chatbot into Tesla vehicles.
