Summary
- Tenstorrent raised $1.5 billion in Series E funding.
- The company's new valuation is $6.2 billion.
- CEO Jim Keller chose funding over a potential sale.
Tenstorrent, an AI chip startup, has successfully raised $1.5 billion in a Series E funding round, boosting its valuation to $6.2 billion. This new valuation marks a significant increase from its 2024 funding round, where it was valued at $2.6 billion.
The funding round was led by Trace Capital and Innovation X, with participation from Agostinelli Group, Sandisk, Tether Investments, T. Rowe Price Group, and Cadence Ventures. Existing investors Ark Invest and Fidelity also contributed.
Earlier this year, Tenstorrent reportedly drew interest for a potential acquisition from major companies including Intel and Qualcomm. However, CEO Jim Keller stated the company opted to secure new funding instead of being acquired.
Keller attributed the renewed investor interest to a successful demonstration in May that showcased the capabilities of Tenstorrent's Galaxy servers in handling advanced AI models. He emphasized the company's strategy to grow organically by catering to customer needs, positioning Tenstorrent as a competitive alternative in the AI chip market dominated by larger players like Nvidia and AMD.
Founded in 2016 by AMD alumni, Tenstorrent employs 1,150 people and focuses on building efficient AI processors, computers, and software, with the flexibility to tailor solutions for various customers, including those with smaller order sizes. Keller highlighted the company's mission to scale from its current financial standing to a much larger business by meeting customers where they are.
