Summary
- TCS expects hiring to slow as AI agents increase.
- AI agents may soon equal the number of employees at TCS.
- The IT sector faces disruption from AI automation.

Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest software exporter, expects IT companies to reduce hiring. Chairman N Chandrasekaran indicated that the company is moving towards an equal number of employees and AI agents in its workforce. This development comes as India's $315-billion IT sector grapples with investor concerns about AI disrupting its traditional business model.
TCS does not plan to reduce its staff size but will hire fewer individuals. Chandrasekaran stated that the day is approaching when the company will have half a million employees and half a million AI agents working collaboratively. This transition signifies a significant shift, with AI agents automating tasks and influencing hiring numbers across the industry.
While AI is expected to automate some tasks, Chandrasekaran also noted that new roles and opportunities will emerge as companies adapt to AI-driven work methods. This shift is occurring as businesses globally seek efficiencies and navigate rapid technological changes. TCS's annualised AI revenue crossed $2.3 billion in the quarter ended March 31, with a projection that 100% of its revenue will have an AI component before the end of the decade.
