Tata Motors Powers Port with Hydrogen

Tata Motors has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. The agreement involves the deployment of 40 green hydrogen internal combustion engine-powered prime movers for cargo transport operations at the port.
This initiative is set to significantly decarbonize the port's cargo handling activities. To facilitate this transition, VOCPA is progressing plans to establish a 2 MW electrolyzer and a dedicated hydrogen refueling station. The deployment will occur in phases over the next two years, starting with trials of a single hydrogen-powered truck.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways will provide funding for this project. This pilot aims to demonstrate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) parity and the potential of green hydrogen in supporting cleaner logistics solutions for Indian ports. Tata Motors has been actively involved in developing commercial vehicles with various green technologies.
