Tata Chemicals Acquires Novabay for Premium Bicarb Growth
19 Dec
Summary
- Novabay acquisition by Tata Chemicals aims to expand specialty bicarb market presence.
- The deal is projected to be finalized by March 2026.
- Novabay specializes in premium-grade sodium bicarbonate for pharma and food sectors.

Tata Chemicals is expanding its specialty chemical portfolio through the proposed acquisition of Novabay. This French subsidiary, established in November 2015, is a key player in manufacturing premium-grade sodium bicarbonate, catering to diverse sectors including pharmaceuticals, food, and personal care across Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Asia, the Middle East, and ASEAN markets.
The acquisition is strategically aligned with Tata Chemicals' objective to deepen its involvement in high-value, non-cyclical product segments. Novabay's existing capacity of approximately 60,000 tons, with potential for expansion to 100,000 tons, and its cGMP, API certifications, will significantly strengthen Tata Chemicals' position in the premium bicarb market.
This strategic move is expected to be finalized by March 2026, with no governmental or regulatory approvals needed. The premium-grade sodium bicarbonate market, driven by steady demand in healthcare and personal care, is poised for growth, further benefiting from rising haemodialysis needs and expanding consumption in emerging economies.
