Target Taps AI Chief to Reshape Retail Future

Target has appointed Chandhu Nair as its first Chief AI Officer, a strategic move to coordinate artificial intelligence efforts across the retail giant. Nair is set to join Target on August 24th as Senior Vice President and Chief AI Officer.

Nair brings a wealth of experience from his prior role at Lowe's, where he spent over six years, most recently as Senior Vice President of stores, data, AI, and innovation. His background also includes significant experience at companies like Staples and Gap, alongside entrepreneurial ventures.

In his new role, Nair expressed excitement about making AI practical for Target's customers and employees. He plans to focus on areas such as improving inventory management, providing better tools for team members, and enabling faster, more confident business decisions. This initiative follows Target's previous AI developments, including the Trend Brain tool and a conversational AI feature for gift recommendations.

Target's move aligns with a broader industry trend, with other major companies like Meta, Google, IBM, Eli Lilly, and Pfizer also establishing chief AI officer positions. Retail competitors such as Walmart, Gap, and Best Buy have also been actively integrating AI technologies into their operations.
