Tamil Nadu Powers Up: New Plant Boosts State Energy

On March 13, 2026, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin virtually inaugurated power generation from Unit-1 of the Udangudi supercritical thermal power plant in Thoothukudi district. This landmark project, with a total cost of ₹13,077 crore, was established by the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited.
The generated electricity will be integrated into the power grid via a 400-kV gas-insulated substation. This expansion is crucial for meeting the growing electricity demand within Tamil Nadu, thereby decreasing the necessity of procuring power from external markets.
Furthermore, the successful operation of this new plant is anticipated to enhance the financial health of the Electricity Board. It is also projected to make substantial contributions to the overall socio-economic advancement of the state.
