Rice Prices Soar in Tamil Nadu Amid Supply Woes
17 Aug
Summary
- Rice prices in Tamil Nadu have increased by Rs5 to Rs15 per kg.
- Supply from Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh has declined.
- RNR and Deluxe boiled rice now cost Rs60 per kg, up from Rs45-Rs50.

Retail prices for various rice varieties in Tamil Nadu have escalated, with increases ranging from Rs5 to Rs15 per kilogram. This price hike stems from a noticeable reduction in rice supplies originating from neighboring states such as Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
Production challenges in Karnataka's Tungabhadra belt, caused by reservoir repair work and lower rainfall, have significantly impacted paddy arrivals. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh has experienced a decline in rice production, contributing to the reduced availability in Tamil Nadu's market. This scarcity, coupled with local demand, has driven up the cost of rice.
Specific brands like RNR and Deluxe boiled rice have seen their prices jump from Rs45-Rs50 per kg to approximately Rs60 per kg. Ordinary Ponni raw rice has also risen from Rs52 to Rs60 per kg. Despite these increases, some experts suggest that price fluctuations are common during the Aadi month and anticipate stabilization within the next two months, especially with recent rainfall offering a positive outlook. However, Tamil Nadu's reliance on external supplies means market stability is closely tied to neighboring states' production and rainfall patterns.
