Taiwan Stocks Tumble: TAIEX Drops Amidst Heavyweight Slump

Taiwan's benchmark stock index, the TAIEX, faced considerable selling pressure on Monday, ultimately closing down 461.97 points, or 1.02%, at 44,762.32. Turnover decreased significantly, marking the lowest volume since April 8.

Heavyweight stocks such as TSMC, MediaTek, Delta Electronics, and Foxconn all saw declines, dragging the index lower. However, UMC emerged as a notable performer, rising 6.01% on strong trading volume. The chipmaker announced an 11.28% year-over-year increase in first-half consolidated revenue.

UMC's forward-looking investments in silicon photonics, a market projected to grow exponentially, also captured attention. This sector's expansion is anticipated to outpace that of AI high-performance computing chips. Meanwhile, other stocks like King Slide Works and Myson Century also posted substantial gains, driven by specific market demands.

The memory sector attracted buying interest, with several companies hitting daily limits or gaining significantly. Computer peripheral and silicon wafer stocks also performed strongly, influenced by price increase reports for wafers. Conversely, petrochemical stocks faced pressure, with major companies experiencing notable declines.

Analysts attribute the market's recent weakness to profit-taking and investors cutting losses. With declining trading volumes, the TAIEX is expected to remain in a consolidation phase as investors await clearer market recovery signals. Individual stock performance is likely to be the primary focus in the interim.
