Swiss Payments Flatline: Cash Still Reigns Supreme
30 Mar
Summary
- Mobile payment app usage stagnated in Switzerland during 2025.
- Debit cards remain the most preferred payment method.
- Most Swiss favor continuing cash use, with few wanting its abolition.

Mobile payment app usage saw no growth in Switzerland throughout 2025, according to a recent survey by the Swiss National Bank. Debit cards continued to be the most frequently used payment method, employed in 37% of all purchases made.
Physical cash held its ground, accounting for 30% of in-person transactions, mirroring its usage levels from the previous year. This enduring popularity of cash is attributed to its perceived anonymity and the sense of control it offers users, with many appreciating the lack of a digital transaction trail.
Despite the rise of digital alternatives like Twint and Apple Pay, which were used in 17% of transactions in 2025, a strong majority of Swiss citizens favor the continued acceptance of cash. Only a minimal 2% expressed a desire to abolish physical currency, citing its impracticality or association with illicit activities.
Experts suggest that payment app growth has plateaued as most individuals already possess them and require additional incentives to switch from established methods. For payment apps to gain further traction, they must offer distinct advantages in speed, convenience, or enhanced spending control through immediate feedback mechanisms.
