Surrey County Council is considering a significant expansion of traffic enforcement through the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Eleven public consultations have been launched across the county, covering specific locations in towns such as Epsom, Staines, Walton, Woking, and Camberley.
The proposed measures target several common traffic infringements. These include enforcing existing yellow box junctions at busy intersections, restricting Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) over 7.5 tonnes from using certain roads during specific hours, and ensuring compliance with bus lane restrictions.
Residents and road users are encouraged to provide feedback on these proposals. If approved, ANPR cameras will monitor identified areas, with potential for Penalty Charge Notices to be issued for contraventions, aiming to improve traffic flow and road safety.
