Stellantis May Sell Brampton Plant, Union Warns

Stellantis is reportedly considering the sale and potential closure of its Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, according to the Unifor union. The company informed the union on August 12, 2026, of its intention to discuss a potential sale with another firm.
This development impacts over 2,200 Unifor Local 1285 members at the plant, who have been on layoff since December 2023. The plant was idled for retooling to produce the Jeep Compass electric SUV, a plan later put on hold. Stellantis announced in October 2025 that Compass production would move to the U.S., leaving the Brampton facility idle indefinitely.
Unifor contends that this shift breaches the collective agreement and commitments made by Stellantis in exchange for federal and provincial government funding. The union has stated that processes to address these breaches have not yielded satisfactory outcomes. Unifor warns that the closure would significantly reduce Canada's automotive footprint and eliminate thousands of well-paid union jobs.
