Elderly Couple Denied Boarding, SpiceJet Ordered to Pay Rs 62,000
28 Jun
Summary
- An elderly couple was denied boarding despite valid passes.
- SpiceJet must refund fare and pay over Rs 62,000 compensation.
- The commission cited deficiency in service and unfair trade practice.

A consumer commission in Srinagar has mandated SpiceJet to refund an elderly couple's airfare and provide over Rs 62,000 in compensation. The ruling stems from an incident two years ago when Ghulam Nabi Fafoo and Raja Begum were denied boarding on a flight from Delhi to Srinagar, despite possessing valid boarding passes.
The couple, returning from Hajj, had checked in and handed over their luggage before proceeding to the gate. They were unexpectedly turned away, allegedly with no explanation, and witnessed other passengers being boarded instead. Their checked-in baggage was returned hours later, by which time they had missed all other flights for the day and were forced to stay overnight in Delhi.
Consequently, the couple incurred additional costs by booking a more expensive IndiGo flight the following morning. The consumer commission found SpiceJet guilty of deficient service and unfair trade practices, acknowledging the immense mental pain, agony, harassment, and financial loss suffered by the complainants.
