SpiceJet Grounds 737 Max Fleet Amid Financial Woes
1 Sep
Summary
- SpiceJet ceased Boeing 737 Max operations after lease termination.
- Airline's fleet reduced to 11 aircraft after returning three planes.
- SpiceJet faces ongoing financial challenges and court disputes.

SpiceJet's operational challenges have intensified with the termination of its lease agreement for Boeing 737 Max aircraft with BOC Aviation. Three of these planes are now en route to the Philippines, leaving SpiceJet with a significantly reduced operating fleet of just 11 aircraft. This decision underscores the severe financial pressures the airline has been experiencing over recent months.
The airline's struggles are evident in its shrinking domestic market share, which fell to 1.6% in July from 3.9% in January. SpiceJet also recorded the lowest punctuality rate among airlines in July, with only 35% of its flights departing on time. Furthermore, the company is involved in a legal battle, seeking additional time from the Delhi High Court to deposit ₹50 crore in connection with a dispute with its former promoter, Kalanithi Maran.
SpiceJet initially received its first 737 Max in 2018 as part of a substantial order. Although operations resumed in 2021 after a global grounding due to accidents, financial difficulties have prevented the airline from fully utilizing its 737 Max fleet.
