Spain Ditches Beach Model for Diverse Tourism
20 Jun
Summary
- Spain aims for 100 million tourists, diversifying beyond coastal appeal.
- Overtourism prompts a shift towards regulated, sustainable tourism practices.
- New strategy promotes inland, cultural, and seasonal tourism growth.

Spain is actively working to diversify its tourism appeal beyond its well-known coastal offerings as it anticipates a record-breaking year with up to 100 million foreign visitors. Minister Jordi Hereu acknowledges the need to move beyond traditional models due to overtourism and climate concerns, emphasizing a preference for "calm growth" that is manageable.
Last year saw 96.8 million foreign tourists and €134 billion in spending, with early 2026 figures showing continued increases. The government is committed to a 2030 tourism strategy focused on decentralizing destinations, deseasonalizing tourism, and diversifying the product away from solely "sun and sand."
This shift is reflected in the "Think You Know Spain? Think Again" campaign, which highlights inland and northern regions, cultural sites, and local festivals instead of beaches. This approach is already showing results, with lower and mid-season periods and inland destinations experiencing significant growth.
Spain's tourism sector, a significant part of its GDP, faced major disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic. A €3.4 billion investment from EU funds is being used to modernize the sector, supporting less-visited regions like Castilla-La Mancha and Galicia.
The diversification aims to combat depopulation by creating jobs in various regions and extending employment stability by lengthening the tourist season. Efforts also include adapting to climate change impacts through sustainable practices like renewable energy and efficient water use.
Minister Hereu stressed that clinging to the old model would lead to growth in tourist numbers but not necessarily in spending value, whereas the current strategy prioritizes increasing revenue and economic benefit per visitor.
