Spain's Amnesty: 600K Migrants Gain Work Permits
2 Jul
Summary
- Over 600,000 migrants received temporary work permits in Spain.
- The government's amnesty drive exceeded expectations by 20%.
- Most applicants for the amnesty came from Latin American countries.

In a significant move, Spain has granted temporary work permits to approximately 609,737 migrants as part of a recent amnesty initiative. This figure represents a substantial portion of the 1.17 million applications received, surpassing the government's initial projection of 500,000 by a considerable margin. The majority of applicants originate from Latin American nations.
The amnesty program, which was open for applications until June 30, allows undocumented migrants residing in Spain for at least five months before the end of 2025, and without a criminal record, to apply for a one-year renewable residence permit. While their main applications are under review, these individuals are now able to commence formal employment.
Officials noted that around 160,000 of the permit holders had already secured formal jobs by the end of last month. The government is actively collaborating with businesses in sectors such as construction, tourism, transport, and care to facilitate job placements for these migrants. Approximately 81% of applicants are under 45, with 57% being men.
