AI Becomes SpaceX's Top Revenue Driver

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) is experiencing a dramatic shift, with artificial intelligence emerging as its primary revenue generator. In the third quarter, the company achieved $14.6 billion in total revenue, a significant increase of 161% year-over-year. The burgeoning "super intelligence" (SI) segment, encompassing AI infrastructure, cloud services, and applications, contributed $7.6 billion.

This AI revenue figure notably surpassed Starlink's $5.3 billion during the same period. A year prior, the SI segment generated only $813 million in quarterly revenue, highlighting the astonishing pace of its expansion. SpaceX's strategy involves both developing AI models, like Grok, and providing the essential computing power that trains and runs these advanced technologies.

The SI segment has already demonstrated impressive financial performance, reporting $5 billion in adjusted EBITDA and $431 million in operating income for the third quarter. However, the company's aggressive growth is fueled by massive capital expenditures. In the third quarter alone, SpaceX invested $16.4 billion in its SI segment, with anticipated total capital expenditures between $35 billion and $40 billion for the fourth quarter.

Investors are advised to monitor key metrics closely: AI revenue growth alongside sustained profitability, the company's ability to generate substantial free cash flow after infrastructure costs, and the returns on its extensive investments in computing capacity.
